LAST YEAR:  Arrowhead won its fifth consecutive Division 1 championship. The Warhawks compiled 299 points, well in front of runner-up Middleton, which scored 258.5 points. In Division 2, DeForest won its first title by scoring 176 points, seven points ahead of runner-up Whitefish Bay with 169.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES-DIVISION 1:  Only two individual events feature its champion returning to defend their titles. Junior Ruby Martin of Madison East is one returning champion, having captured the title in the 100-yard freestyle last year. She returns to the meet with the best qualifying time of 51.50 in the event. Sophomore Stephanie Armstrong of Waukesha West is among a number of challengers Martin will face. She has the next fastest qualifying time at 52.08 after placing third last year. Martin is also the fastest qualifier in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.87. She is the top returning swimmer from last year’s event having finished second. Sophomore Kylie Rosenstock of Madison West is the returning champion in the diving competition. She has the top qualifying score of 466.15. Her toughest challenge may come from junior Amy Feivor of Appleton North, who finished third last year and has the second-best qualifying score at 424.7. Senior Ashley Bolin of Oshkosh West enters action with the fastest time in the 200 freestyle at 1:52.35. She placed third in 2005. Senior Danielle Beckwith of Middleton was last year’s third-place finisher in the event, and she enters the meet with the second-fastest time at 1:54.16. Beckwith is among the contenders in the 500 freestyle as well, having notched the top qualifying time of 5:01.18 and having the distinction of being the top returner after finishing runner-up last year. Freshman Aja Van Hout of Madison East should also be considered a contender in the event. Van Hout may also be the top contender in the 200 individual medley, having recorded the top qualifying time at 2:07.72. Among those she will need to fend off are seniors Sarah Wardecke of Appleton West/Kimberly, who placed seventh last year, and Natalie Wallen of Brookfield Central. Senior Jessica Kapke of Brookfield East finished runner-up last year in the 100 butterfly. She returns to the event in pursuit of the title with an entering time of 57.23. However, freshman Emma Goral of Arrowhead and sophomore Katie Schroeder of Brookfield Central both have qualifying times that indicate they will be in the hunt for the crown as well at 56.70 and 56.91, respectively. Kapke is also among an experienced list of contenders in the 100 backstroke after placing seventh a year ago. Sophomore Jackie Powell of Madison Memorial finished sixth and has posted the fastest qualifying time in the event at 58.61, and senior Clair Martin of Waukesha South/Mukwonago is the top returner having placed fourth. Another crowded field of contenders will battle for the 100 breaststroke title. Sophomore Emily Russart of Badger/Big Foot/Williams Bay enters with an event-best time of 1:04.69 after placing fifth last year. Other contenders are Wardecke and junior Carolyn Salutz of Stevens Point, who tied for third in 2006, and junior Amy Lewis of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, who placed seventh last year.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES-DIVISION 2:  Seven events feature last year’s returning champion. A pair of swimmers account for four of those events. Senior Kelly Winckler of DeForest is the three-time defending champion in 200 freestyle and the two-time champion in the 500 freestyle. She possesses the fastest qualifying time in the 200 freestyle this year at 1:57.06, and her 500 freestyle time of 5:10.20 is the third fastest time behind freshman Kelsey Hojan-Clark of Brookfield Academy at 5:05.09 and freshman Clare Chamberlain of Shorewood at 5:10.19. Senior Beckie Thompson of New Berlin West is the two-time defending champion in both the 50 and 100 freestyles and returns as the fastest qualifier in each of those events with times of 23.92 and 52.33, respectively. Her toughest challenge in both events may come from senior Chelsea Peterson of Plymouth and sophomore Maggie Smith of Whitefish Bay. Peterson placed runner-up to Thompson in the 50 freestyle last year and was third in the 100 freestyle. Smith finished fourth in the 50 freestyle last year and has the third fastest time entering the meet in the 100 freestyle. Senior Alison Ceranski of Marinette may also contend in the 50 freestyle. She was third last year and has the third fastest qualifying time. Senior Jenna Lennertz of Greendale is the three-time defending champion in the 100 butterfly. She will go for her fourth championship in the event and is the favorite with the fastest qualifying time of 57.74, which is more than two second faster than any other qualifier. Sophomore Sadie Nennig of Grafton prevented Lennertz from capturing back-to-back titles in the 100 backstroke last year. She edged Lennertz by 0.2 seconds. Nennig returns as the top qualifier with a time of 59.38, but another showdown with Lennertz is imminent, who enters with the second-fastest time at 59.50. Nennig is also the top returning finisher in the 200 individual medley, coming off last year’s second-place finish. She will need to out-perform Chamberlain and Hojan-Clark, who enter the meet with better qualifying times at 2:09.03 and 2:11.00, respectively, and sophomore Jennah Haney of Milton, who has the third-fastest qualifying time at 2:11.78. Haney is the returning champion in a competitive 100 breaststroke field. All top eight finishers in the event last year return for another shot at the title, including junior Liz Bishop of Whitnall, who finished third and has the fastest qualifying time this year at 1:06.87. The experienced list of other contenders include sophomore Alexa Statz of Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, who was runner-up last year, and senior Lauren Caruso of DeForest, who was fourth. In the diving competition, senior Morgan Hearn of Edgewood is the top returner after finishing second last year. She possesses the best qualifying performance at 354.4. Senior Laura Citro of Cudahy should also be considered a serious contender. She finished third a year ago and has the second-best qualifying score at 340.2.

MEET HISTORY: The WIAA began girls swimming and diving championships in 1970 and moved to a two-division format in 1992. Madison area schools have dominated the championships through the years. Either Madison West or Madison Memorial won all the championships through 1983 and all but one of the Division 1 titles since the inception of the two-division format in 1992 until 2001. Arrowhead has won the six titles since then, including the last five consecutive crowns. West has won 15 titles, and Memorial has won 14. Arrowhead has captured six titles (1987, 2002-06), and Homestead won championships in 1984 and 1985. In Division 2, Shorewood won four titles consecutively from 1994-97 and its fifth and sixth titles in 2001 and in 2003. The other multiple champions in Division 2 are Germantown, which won titles in 1992 and 1993; Whitnall, which won titles in 1999 and 2000; and Grafton, which won championships in 2004 and 2005.

September 20-     Two Rivers at Kiel/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah
It wasn't a championship win, but Kiel girls swim coach Melissa Wiesner got the traditional post-meet celebratory dunk in the pool after her Raiders whipped visiting Two Rivers 99-64 last Thursday.
Kiel won 10 of the 12 events including a sweep of the top three spots in the 100 yard butterfly won by Sarah Dietrich in 1:28.09, followed by Kristen Wieck and Courtney Lechler. Sarah Kisiolek led a 1-2 Kiel finish in the 500 freestyle winning in 6:10.15 with Whitney Barnes second.
Sarah Kisolek also won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:31.83.
Kaitlyn Schnell won two individual evenets taking the 50 yard freestyle at 29.12 seconds and 100 yard backstroke in 1:11.09.
Kisiolek and Schnell teamed with Abby Forss and Elaine Kildsig to win both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relays. "This is just what we needed," said Wiesner.

                                    Chilton-Valders at Plymouth
They're not a major threat yet, but the Chilton-Valders girls swim team definitely has narrowed the gap in their attempts to close in on traditional power Plymouth.
The Panthers beat C-V 123-60 in a Eastern Wisconsin Conference dual meet Thursday in Plymouth. However, Chilton-Valders did manage to win three events.
Marissa Schuh dominated the field in winning the 100 yard butterfly in 1:06.39 with Denys Koenig coming in third at 1:17.59. Stephanie Klein won the 100 yard freestyle in 59.64 seconds and the 200 freestyle relay team of Winnie Buelow, Noelle Michels, Christy Weber and Koenig, won that event in 1:57.93.
Second place finishers included Koenig in the 200 freestyle, Schuh in the 50 freestyle, and the 200 medley relay team of Jackie Lutze, Buelow, Schuh and Klein, as well as the 400 freestyle relay team of Koenig, Michels, Schuh and Klein.
In junior varsity swimming, Christy Weber won the 50 freestyle in 30.93 seconds.

Plymouth's Theresa Gielissen was a part of two winning relays and won two individual races as well in the Panthers' non-conference triangular victory over Port Washington and Two Rivers at Plymouth.
