PLYMOUTH – A 21-6 spurt to close out the meet sparked the Plymouth Panthers past Kiel, 39-28, in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference wrestling dual Thursday night at the PHS gym.

PHS improved to 1-1 in EWC dual action (1-1 overall). The Panthers won four of the final five matches, including three pins, to erase a 22-18 deficit.

Dan Uribe started the run with an 11-7 decision at 125 pounds. Collin Rortvedt followed with a pin at 130 to give PHS a 27-22 lead.

The Raiders recaptured the lead, 28-27, on Jay Wallace’s pin at 135. The Panthers answered with falls by Jake Ohman and Brandon Wigginas at 140 and 145, respectively, in the final two matches to seal the win.

“We wrestled really well and finished the night with six pins,” said Panther head coach Bob Weix.

“The kids were really aggressive and wanted to knock down their conference goal of winning one conference dual meet this year.”

PHS finished 0-7 in EWC duals last season.

“Collin Rortvedt showed why he is one of the best wrestlers in the area with a really nice performance tonight to help get the lead back,” Weix said.

Plymouth began the meet very strong with three straight pins to go ahead 18-0. Justin Lesko scored a fall at 152, followed by pins from Luke Ohman at 160 and Zach Pfankuch, 171.

Kiel bounced back by winning four of the next six matches, including two pins, to go ahead 22-18. There were double-forfeits at 103 and 112.

“We have struggled with youth and not filling weight classes but we matched up well with Kiel tonight and got the points when we needed them,” Weix said.

“It was good for us to get out of the gates fast and then the other guys kept us in the match.

Our biggest goal tonight was to get the first takedown because we wanted to get better from last week’s loss [Dec. 3 at Two Rivers]. The kids got seven of the first takedowns out of the 11 matches we wrestled in,” the coach noted.
