Panthers rally for EWC dual win

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Panthers rallied from a 17-12 deficit to beat visiting New Holstein, 39-29, in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference dual wrestling meet Tuesday night.

PHS upped its EWC record to 2-2 (4-12 overall).

Junior 160-pounder Luke Ohman kick-started the Panthers’ comeback with a pin that gave them the lead for good, 18-17. Also scoring falls for PHS were Collin Rortvedt at 130 and Brandon Wiggins, 140.

The Panthers won three matches by forfeit.

“The kids knew we needed to win in certain places and we did a lot of bumping in the weight classes to make the win possible,” said Panther head coach Bob Weix.

“The kids were told before the dual where we needed wins and what we were going to do.  It
was going to be a tight dual and we came out on top.

“We started by putting the pressure on Collin Rortvedt to wrestle 130 [up from 125] and we needed a pin. Collin delivered and got us going in the right direction,” Weix said.

“Brandon Wiggins has been coming around for us and beating kids he knows he should take care of.  This is a great sign and he is getting better in the practice room.”

“The kids did everything we asked of them tonight,” he said.

Weix was pleased with how Ohman and Zach Pfankuch came through with key wins. Pfankuch scored four takedowns in the third period to earn an 8-6 comeback won at 189.

Freshman Tanner Neils was a junior varsity winner for PHS with a pin.

The Panther varsity will host the annual Plymouth Invitational Saturday, starting at 9:15 a.m. Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah will also compete in the eight-team dual tournament.

Anyone wishing to volunteer at the tourney should call Weix at PHS at 893-6411, extension 1567.
